hi am running premiere pro on xp sp2. couple of months back when playing clips on timeline the audio started crackling, have tried uninstalling both premiere and audio card drivers ( e-mu e404) to no avail. it has become a little problematic as when editing a clients footage i cant tell if its the system distorting or if the footage audio is distorting. I have had the same set-up for a few years now, so no system changes were made prior to this problem, have trawled the net for a solution with no success other than to read a post that mentioned a total system wipe! this is something i wish to avoid obviously, any help would be appreciated…

The most common source I know of for that problem is a sample rate mis-match. I wouldn’t say it is likely, but you should double-check your hardware/software/firmware settings on your eMu to make sure…
Check your QuickTime (control panel) audio settings too, just for completeness.

Is your sound good in other applications?

Try reinstalling the soundcard drivers (the original one not an update).
Silly as this might sound I had similar problem few years back, same setup for ages and then realized my minijack cable was the problem.
Check that your hardware is connecting properly. Jiggle it as you playback in PPro at the computer end and the Speakers end to see if it affects it.

Same here – ever since I got a Sony V1U – tried every menu option in the camera, every audio setting in PPro – both 1.0 and now CS3. The crackling seems to be created in the capture – the file sounds bad in Windows media player. I am capturing all in DV mode – not HDV so that may be an issue in downconverting in the camera. What camera are you using? What project settings are you using? Are you capturing over firewire of through the sound card?

Certainly there is no crackle in hearing the camera play back through a good speaker system.

Now, it could be that this is clipping during recording, because I keep the microphones hotter than some recommend – my JVC DV100 seemed to do a better job at limiting incoming audio. Maybe the camera has an option for this that I have not yet found.

Sound Forge Vinyl restoration cleans it up.

I own and operate a SONY Z1P. I shoot both HDV and DV modes and use the downconvert when editing the HDV footage. I have used it on Mac and PC and haven’t had any issues with audio yet. It is possible that the audio has been recorded too loud and then crackling at the distortion level. Might want to clean up what you have and do some test recordings with the camera to see what recording setting is best. Soundbooth from Adobe also has a great audio cleanup function. Whatever you can do to get it back on track is good. But you need to test the recording on any camera and make sure its not recording incorrectly.
