Audio Conversion: 29.97 NTSC to 25 PAL??
Hey guys, here’s the situation (long history):
– Have footage shot in PAL, exported QT PAL file of entire timeline, brought it into NTSC timeline, applied conversion filter.NOW I had a NTSC timeline of my project. The actual show content is 46:50 in length. I have the visuals, sound mix, everything works fine. Now i’m trying to make a PAL version of the same show.
Right now I have a timeline, and I have the original QT PAL file in it, it times out to 46:50 (note: it’s JUST video). I added my sound mix files but they’re coming up approx. 2 seconds 21 frames too short. Any ideas and/or solutions?
NOTE: FCP is also playing back the sound in a weird way. If i just hit play and watch, sound is off sync. But if I scrub frame-by-frame, sound is in sync. Also, if I go towards the last couple seconds of my audio, nothing plays even though the waveform shows that audio is present. If I go back a few seconds further, the audio that plays is the audio that should be playing “later” (it’s basically playing audio a few seconds ahead regardless of what the waveform is showing).

If you make a combined NTSC movie / audio track, and bring that movie into the PAL timeline, then, say, delete the NTSC video, FCP should account for the speed difference and get the audio to line up with the PAL video. It’s all because NTSC doesn’t run at 30fps but 29.97fps.
In the next release of my standards converter, there will be an option to produce a conversion that works with audio from the unconverted source, but I don’t know if it would help too much with this mixed workflow, but my above idea should work for you.

I’m not in the studio right now, but what I sort of tried that. I have a Quicktime 10-bit preset export of the NTSC timeline for D-Beta transfer. I put that QT file into the PAL timeline. I put the video on the lowest track and made it invisible, so the audio playing would be from the 10-bit NTSC video file while the video showing would be the native PAL video clip. The audio was still short. I applied the conversions filter using both basic conversion and external sync, still was too short :(.
BUT I didn’t actually delete the video clip (leaving the audio behind). I’ll try that when I get in.
Any other solutions?

Phill, you might need a new beta as I think the external sync was broken in one direction in an older version. Drop me an email and we can figure something out.
