I was hoping to get a good idea what everyone else is doing as far as audio compression in post. I’m doing a half-hour TV show, and I want to apply a compressor / limitor to my mix to “tighten up” my dynamic range a bit.

I’m not a big fan of dumping everything to Soundtrack PRO, because of the longer format material. What audio filters and settings is everyone using? I’ve played around with the compressor filter in FCP, but was disappointed with the lack of compression/reduction meters and etc.

    Any ideas?

Someone on this board once suggested using the FCP Compressor/Limiter with these settings as a starting point:
    Threshold: -20
    Ratio: 2
    Attac: 20
    Release: 200

I tried that and stuck with it and it’s a rare occasion that I have to do any more tweaking.
I use Soundtrack Pro only for eliminating background noise, hums, etc… and for quick, easy normalizing.

Thanks for posting that again, Kenny. I forgot to save those numbers last time.

Ok, that’s pretty much what I’ve been doing.

What limiter do you use? The settings I’ve seen only allow a ceiling within a few dB of 0 — I set my levels to peak at around -12 (using -20 as my analog “zero” reference). Do you apply a limit? If yes, what?

    Thanks!
