I need some help with choosing the proper codec for compression

Lets say for instance I have video01.wmv
-I immediately convert this to video01.avi NTSC DV “Preview”

Why preview? I discovered that if I render with best or good option my audio goes out of sync to the video. To fix this I set the main window settings to preview and preview and I do the same for AVI rendering.

Now I can edit it without issues or any choppyness
The problem I have is that my audio is PCM uncompressed (Huge File Size that I want to fix)

I installed Lame MP3 ACM on windows 7 build 7100, but it didn’t take. It doesn’t show up in vegas

Since lame mp3 doesn’t work in windows 7 what other codec can I use?

Before I went vegas I used to use virtualdub + xvid + lame mp3 exclusively.

You can only use PCM uncompressed because that is the only audio that is supported by the NTSC DV standard. If you want to use MP3 audio, you need to use a different video codec.

I’m not entirely sure I understand the issue. PCM uncompressed audio files aren’t all that large, at least not when compared to video. For example, a minute of uncompressed 16-bit, 48 kHz stereo audio occupies about 11 MB of disk space, while a minute of NTSC DV video would take up roughly 206 MB. That’s without the audio, so including the audio in an NTSC DV AVI render, you get about 217 MB/minute. This is not a bad choice for editing and should be relatively smooth to edit. As to the sync issue, I really have no idea.
