Hello bovines. Often, as with all editors, I need to import files with audio, i.e. Quicktimes, .mp3’s, .aiff’s. etc. into my Media Composer. For some reason they always come in too loud. I always have to knock the amplitude down in either the Audio Mixer tool or with the Auto Gain. The original source files are fine but the Avid is giving them an extra boost upon import. Any ideas? Thanks folks.

The Avid does not boost anything upon import, it imports bit by bit, sample by sample.
If you are actually seeing digital “overs”, then your master volume output might be set wrong, or you are mono summing stereo pairs.
Also, sound files like MP3’s or files from CD and Quicktime have often been normalised at 100%, meaning that their peak audio is at 0dB full scale digital. Especially music is often compressed, limited and normalised, which means it doesn’t easily translate into a broascast environment without decreasing levels first.
By default, I bring down imported music by 9 or 12 dB’s in the Audio Mix Tool.
