Audio Clipping
Posted by David Knight on February 8, 2011 at 5:45 pmHi, I have just received some files to edit but the dialogue only in the sound is peaking. what can i do with this? Its not too bad but just a little annoying. apparently the guy didn’t realise the VU was switched on on his mixer.
Thanks guysMichael Gissing replied 15 years, 3 months ago 4 Members · 3 Replies -

February 8, 2011 at 7:03 pmIf it distorted when it was initially recorded you’re stuck with that since the distortion is “baked in”. There are programs, like SoundSoap, that can remove noise that may help a little if the distortion is constant, but mostly there’s not much you can do besides re-record it.
If it came from a tape, there is a chance it was captured with the audio levels set to hot so you might be able to re-load the tapes in with the audio lower to get rid of the distortion.

February 8, 2011 at 8:01 pmHi David,
To be sure I understand correctly, you have received the full mix, which doesn’t clip itself, but contains a some dialog that is clipped? If so, there really isn’t much you can do. If you have the actual dialog audio file that clips, there’s iZotope RX which can usually save it quite well with its Declip function (https://www.izotope.com/products/audio/rx/).
Once the clipped audio is mixed with other audio, you lose the opportunity to fix it, since the clipping is no longer at the levels where RX will work to fix it. The process will mash the whole mix up before it does anything to the clipping. In that case, you could ask your audio guys to have a look at what they can do on their side. It’s their mistake, after all. And a biggie.
