  • Audio-change back & forth from L/R channel- help?

Posted by Dv Memories video on January 11, 2007 at 12:27 pm

I’m not sure that I’m doing this correctly, could someone help?

I shot a wedding using 2 wireless mics on 2 channels: left on the groom and right on the podium.

When I start the file, both audio streams are in one track. I copy the track to a 2nd audio track for a total of 4 channels. Then I change the audio settings on each channel so it has left only on one, and right only on the other.

When I am scrubbing, and get to a part where the bride and groom are talking, I delete the podium segment, then copy the groom mic to the other channel. When there is a speaker at the podium, i delete the groom mic segment and copy the podium mic segment to the opposite “channel”.

Now, I need to get both channels to actually mix together. Do i need to render the audio separately, then change that audio track to “combine channels” or is there an easier way to pan both tracks so they are coming out of both speakers?

    Hope this makes sense.

nope and you don’t really need t odelete anything either. I do this ALL the time and frankly it’s even worse for me because I run BOTH my wireless to my main camera PLUS my hypercaroid go to it as well. I just switch the camera back and forth between the 2 receivers. (I use a full sized camera with 3 XLR inputs HOWEVER I digress)
This is to me at least the easiest way to do this.

Copy the ENTIRE audio track to a NEW track (make sure they sync up) then make one the RIGHT CHANNEL ONLY and 1 the LEFT CHANNEL ONLY-to mute certain parts of EITHER channel use an ENVELOPE(Mute of course) found by right clicking on th etrack header-the envelopes will allow you to mute or unmute certain areas of the tracks with keyframes which will allow very precise placement of the envelope points. I also use volume envelopes to make level adjustments. When you render you have 1 track with all the good stuff you just worked so hard to make in it. One track that has only rh audio you left UNMUTED and with the LEVEL adjustments you made.

but doesnt that still leave one mic on the left channel and the other mic on the right channel? i want them combined. Maybe i’m not understanding you correctly.

I find it easier to just delete the unused segments rather than mess with the envelopes.

Deleting the unused is fine if thats your preference. I just find envelopes to work for me. As for the audio being to the left or right, no it won’t be. What you need to do is set the left channel to LEFT CHANNEL ONLY and the right to RIGHT ONLY and what happens then is it CENTERS the audio so it’s not a “stereo” sound but a mono sound coming from both the left and right speakers at the same levels. When you render the piece be it AVI or MPG the audio tracks will combine to 1 track giving you both the mic’d audio (lav mic) and the on camera mic as one track therfore both will go to both the front speakers. Again, thats the reason for using VOLUME envelopes to be able to control the levels of each track before you render them.
Here’s a way to see (hear) for yourself. Switch the lav mic audio to the channel its on and the on camera mic to that channel-the waveforms will be centered, then play it back. Mute one then the other and just play one at a time THEN play them both together. I think, unless I have completely mis-read your original post, that you’ll have what you’re looking for for the audio.

But when I set a “stereo” channel for “left only”, and then play it back, it is not centered and coming out of both speakers. The pan setting on the left side of the timeline is on center. Its just not coming out of the right speaker. When I change it to “right only” i get the opposite result… but not both speakers at the same time.

This is prior to rendering, just playing back the timeline. Maybe this is why, or should i be able to preview it first?

    Here’s the easy way:

    https://www.jetdv.com/scripts/StereoSplit.js

Just select the event, run the script, and it will split it across two tracks one being the left side and the other being the right side.

[DV Memories Video] ” I set a “stereo” channel for “left only”, and then play it back, it is not centered and coming out of both speakers.”

Something’s wrong there. Does the waveform use the full height of the audio track?
