  • Audio CD vs. Data CD question

Recently completed a Book-on-Disc recoding and edit session. The resulting 118 chapters are ready to burn to CD. As Data CD’s they will fit on (2)discs. As Audio CD’s it will require (8)discs, since the duration of each chapter fills up the disc quickly using Nero 6 as the burning app. Obviously, we cannot use Data Cd’s and we cannot use MP3 files due to the large number of CD players that cannot read them. Any way to get these to fewer discs uding Audio CD’s? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How many running minutes is your project? I don’t remember the exact number, but you should be able to get about 72 minutes on each audio CD. If your data files are 44.1 kHz 16 bit (not compressed) and fit on two CDs, it seems the audio CD should also fit on 2 CDs. You have a limit of 99 chapters on one CD, but it sounds like this shouldn’t be an issue with only 118 chapters in your title.

Are your sound files in stereo, and do they need to be?
If you tried converting them to mono files then they just halved in size.
However do test it out. Im not sure what nero will do with them (audio may well be mono from 1 channel only but its wortha look.

    Hi Peter,

Even if the “original files” are “halved in size” when they are burned to a traditional audio CD that will still only allow for approx. 72 minutes of RUN-TIME per audio CD.

The problem is not the original files’ SIZE, but in the actual RUNNING TIME of the audio.

During the burning process, a conventional audio CD format will just make the single mono track into 2 identical audio (dual mono) tracks that take up as much space on the disc as two “stereo” tracks.

    Am I wrong in this?

OTOH, I suppose it would be possible to record the “first-half” of the audio on Channel 1 of the CD and the “second-half” of the audio on Channel 2 of the CD (one would have to listen to only one channel at a time.)

This method is used in certain audio cassette books-on-tape (by means of a special switchable headphone adapter designed for single-channel listening in both ears.)

A unique problem with this method with CD’s is that any “cut markers” or “chapter markers” would be difficult to set due to there being two separate programs occupying the same portion of the CD.
I guess one could just set a marker every 5 or 10 minutes for ease of “jumping through” the presentation.
