audio capture mono vs. stereo
Hello – hope this is not too basic — i’ve been searching for a long time before posting.
My question is about what setting to use when capturing the audio segment of my clips.Dual Mono or Stereo – that is the question. I am aware that you can unlink a stereo pair or conversely turn two mono tracks into a stereo-linked pair in FCP using the “modify” menu. Still, I’d like to get it right on capture and not drive my editor bonkers. (I am the director/shooter, doing a bunch of the logging and capturing). Oh, I have FCP version 5.1.4
Most of my footage does NOT use two separate lavs from different speakers as described below, but ch.1 lav and ch.2 shotgun mounted on the camera, essentially pointed in the direction of the speaker but with obviously more ambient, so I want to keep them separate when we are editing, not mixed together.
On two occasions I had ch. 1 and ch. 2 both from the shotgun (so I think I would bring those in as stereo), but NEVER use the camera mic as a source so that’s not an issue.
I have captured some footage already (shot on dvx100 and dvx100a, some 24p standard, some 24p advanced, and yes i used different capture settings for each) and used the dual mono setting to capture two channels of audio. I did this because I had read the following on p. I- 290-291 of the FCP manual:
Dual Mono Versus Stereo Audio
