Every once in a while when I am digitizing and then I go to edit the story a audio buzz comes through on the track. We have checked the beta tape and the buzz is not on the tape. We took in another edit suite and they digitized it and there was no buzz. We changed the cords in and out of the deck. We cleaned up the cords in the back…making sure nothing was crossed. I even tried to digitize standing on one foot.. nothing seems to be working. Now this doesn’t happen every week it really is hit or miss. It did it on most of my stories I did this week and it didn’t on other stories. Now that my stories are out I did a test and redigitized the same sot’s and there was no buzz!!! This is really driving me crazy. Would anyone have a clue what is going on? Do I need to turn my cell phone off during digitizing??? I am running out of answers.

Thank you so much for all your help,

Is the buzz on your media? Have you tried moving the media clips from your suite to the other suite and see if the buzz is there. If it’s not, then the media is clean and something is happening in your output chain (video card out to mixer in and/or mixer out to monitors amps). If it is on the media then the problem is definitely occuring during digitizing. Do you monitor the tape deck’s output or the return from FCP when you digitize? Are your cables wired balanced or unbalanced? If you don’t hear the buzz at the deck outputs or on the FCP return then it could be a problem within your CineWave card. You might try switching the cards in the two suites and see if the problems follows the card in your suite. Just some ideas that come to mind.

The buzz is not on the media. We have taken it in other rooms digitized the clip and there was no buzz. We have listen to the tape with headphones on in another deck and there is no buzz. The cables are balanced. We have three suites here 2 are Avid and only 1 is FCP. So, I can’t move the card around… The real thing that is getting us is that it doesn’t happen all the time. For a while it was for a couple weeks in a row then it seemed to stop for about a month. Now it was back this week. That is what is a pain we can’t seem to nail down a reason.

    Thanks for your input,

Are your speakers connected to the Mac or the Cinewave BOB? Should be the Cinewave BOB. This is the most common cause of unknown audio buzzes.

When I said listen to the media, I meant the digitized media on your hard drive, not the tape. If the digitized media is ok, then the problem is in your monitoring.

Another thought is CB radios, ham radios, taxi companies or anyone else in your building or neighborhood who might be emitting RF that could cause an intermittent buzz. In a former facility there was someone in our area with a souped up CB radio. Whenever he drove by and was transmitting some of his signal leaked into our audio. It only affected the video suite which was on the side of the building by the road.
