  • Audio but no video (black screen)

Posted by Tyler Wentzel on August 12, 2010 at 10:08 pm

    Hi,

I have tried unclicking the “Show Video Monitor” icon suggested by others in the forums to no avail. I have tried the video in 2 different file formats: .mov and .mp4 video. Both are openable and savable in Vegas, yet neither allowe me to watch the video. There is a video track and its audio track counterpart, but when I try to play it back, I only receive the audio feed.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Tyler

Wait, there is no video AFTER you render? (My problem).

If there is no video showing up in the timeline, like, the inserted media just is black, uninstall Quicktime player and download an earlier version like 7.5.

    Hey thanks for the reply.

It actually produces no video prior to and following rendering. I tried downgrading to Quicktime 7.6.6 or something like that. No dice.

There are two reasons for video but no audio:

    1. You do not have the proper Video For Windows (VFW) video codec installed on your PC to decode the video.

Solution: Use a free utility like GSpot to determine what codec you need and find a VFW version of the codec.

(Important note: Vegas cannot use DirectShow codecs. Only VFW codecs will solve your problem)

(Even more important note: The 64-bit version of Vegas requires a 64-bit version of the codec. 32-bit codecs will not work with Vegas Pro 64-bit)

    2. The file is Quicktime MOV format and you are using a version of Vegas older than Vegas Pro 9.0e with a Quicktime newer than 7.6.4

Solution: Get Vegas Pro 9.0e or uninstall Quicktime and re-install Quicktime 7.6.4 or earlier.

One of those two should be your problem and solution.

FYI, if anyone is still having this problem, TechSmith as of October 2010 does have a 64-bit codec. See:
