Audio becomes distorted when hard panning channels
I’m trying to make a tape back up master of a program. I’m running a G5 with FCP Studio (FCP5), Sony DSR 20 that is well maintained.
The program in question is about 9 minutes long. Narration on ch. 1&2, music and effects on 3&4. My goal is to hard pan narration to the left and hard pan m&e to the right. When I do this, 2 thing happen:
– the narration channel becomes slightly distorted
– I can faintly hear the narration on the opposite, right, music channel.
– in addtion to the bleed, there are occasion, timeline repeatable, bug zapper-like distortion hits.I’ve tried a ton of things but nothing is working. Has anyone ever heard of this happening?
If I keep everything center panned, it sounds great. All the levels are spot on. I thought it might be my equipment rack but I’m now monitoring directly off the DSR headphone jack with Sony V6 studio monitor headphones.
I did a test with 1k tone an it creates a similar problem. Took 5 seconds of tone and copied it on the timeline 3x. 1st is left panned, 2nd is center, 3rd is right panned. When it’s panned, the frequency becomes slightly distorted and… wrong. The only correct sounding ton is the center panned version.
Any thoughts group?
