Audio always lagging behind video
Posted by Jacob Saunders on November 3, 2012 at 6:53 amHi,
I’m using Sony Vegas to build a few compilation videos & I’m running into an really annoying problem. For some of the clips, I’m screen recording them as they play since they can’t be downloaded. After recording & saving them, they play fine through my Quicktime Player & Windows Media Player but as soon as I import them to Vegas, the audio is always lagging behind the video & just never stays in sync. I’m so confused because they play fine before I import them. What could be causing this?
Thank you,

November 3, 2012 at 11:12 amIs it lagging on the Vegas timeline or after you render?
Also what are you using to screen record?Steve Rhoden

November 3, 2012 at 11:15 amMy guess is that your computer is underpowered and can’t keep up with what you’re expecting it to do.
Have you tried dropping the preview quality? -

November 3, 2012 at 4:51 pmThe lagging is right on the timeline. I have a Windows virtual machine running on my Mac so I first screen record the clips from my Mac using Quicktime, convert them to .wmv, drag them to my Windows machine, & then import them to Vegas. I also notice the quality of the clips diminishes too. I notice that it only happens to clips I recorded from the screen since the ones I downloaded from Youtube are fine.

November 3, 2012 at 4:55 pmWMV is a distribution format, not an editing format.
What format are the source clips?
What version of Vegas are you running? -

November 3, 2012 at 5:03 pmI’ve also tried MOV, MP4, & AVI but none of those worked so I had to stick with WMV. Even after I installed Quicktime on Windows like Vegas told me to, the MOV & MP4 files still wouldn’t work. I’m running Vegas Pro 12.

November 3, 2012 at 5:38 pmNone of those formats should give you any grief in Vegas.
What could be a problem with MOV and MP4 files is if you’re using the latest version of QuickTime as a few users have reported issues with it.
Find a slightly older version, uninstall the latest one, install the older one and try it again.
AVI files shouldn’t be a problem either unless they’re a strange one to Vegas.
What does MediaInfo say about them?

November 4, 2012 at 4:42 pmBINGO!! I found an older version of Quicktime, downloaded it, restarted my computer, successfully imported a MOV file into Vegas, dragged it into the timeline, & now the audio & video are in perfect sync. Thank you so much!

I’m very glad to hear that I helped solved your problem.
I know a guy who uses FCP and he’s told everyone who works for him to NEVER update to the latest version of QuickTime as it almost always causes grief, even for Mac users.
