When you placed the content on the timeline, Vegas created a video and audio track. Simply right click on the audio track and delete it if you really no longer want it. You can also mute it with the circle with a line through it button.

Then, drag and drop practically any sound file on the timeline and you’re done.

If iam reading your post correctly:
That is the simplest of things to do on the Vegas timeline.
Just delete the audio below the video, then drop the audio you
desire right below it, then render.

If there’s more than one event (what Vegas calls a clip) on the timeline, then you need to click the audio portion of it, press ‘u’ (for ungroup) and then delete it.
If you don’t do this, both audio and video will disappear when you press delete.
