  • Attaching Text to the Side of a Buffalo

In the video that I am making, I have a clip of a standing buffalo. I want to make the title of my video look like it is branded into the side of the buffalo. Therefore, I need the letters of the text to conform to the buffalo’s body and move the same way that the buffalo’s side moves. Can After Effects map out the buffalo’s side based on the texture of its hair and then attach the letters so that they move in the exact way the buffalo moves? Or is there any other way my disered effect can be achieved? I tried using a displacement map, but that only effected the edges of the text, not leaving me with the effect I wanted. If there is a way to make the entire text grab on the the texture of the buffalo, distorting the entire word, moving it with the buffalo, this is what I want to do.

So nobody answered your first post? 🙂

This is a 3D displacement issue, and AE has no native tools to solve that problem.
This is the closest you can get using AE, in my opinion:

You might have to make your own displacement map representing the contour of the buffalo as seen in profile. Your footage might not work, because it probably doesn’t show light values where the animal is convex, and dark where it is concave.

Well thank you for responding, I will try out that plugin to see if it works :).

Alright, I think that this might work. I am just a little shady on how to use this plugin… Should I use a high contrast version of the buffalo as one of the image maps? And what should I do for the other 4 Image maps?
