Have you played with AJA’s HDV Playback Easy Setups? I was surprised when I did test Master out to my AJ-1200A via HD-SDI from an HDV timeline, the project was ready to output immediately, no long conforming process. Very cool if you can go that route or even play your HDV timeline directly to an HDCAM deck.

I got you beat Shane. HDV 1080i/50, DV NTSC, DV PAL, DVCPro HD 720/50, BetaSP, DigiBeta and DVD. All compiled together in a 1080i/50 DVCPro HD timeline for master to my AJ-1200A at 1080i/50.
Talk about frame rate issues, it made my head spin. Graeme’s Standards Converter was a heavy player in that episode and I used Shake for the first time to make one final conversion that completely saved our closing Standup.
May none of you ever have to deal with that many frame rate / conversion issues in one project. All I can say is God Bless AJA and Graeme Nattress! 🙂

Hate to say it as an FCP fan but this project might be better done on a new AVID media composer as you can mix formats in the same timeline and you have the excellent DNxHD codecs.
Got to hope FCP6 addresses mixed formats in the timeline because this type of problem can only get worse for editors.

The terranex does not deal with codecs, it simply does the Up-Convert to either 1080i or 720 and then that signal is recorded to the tape deck of choice. In your case you’ll want it recorded to DVCPro HD tape and it will look absolutely perfect. We’ve had it done here on occasion and it’s worth every dollar you have to spend on the conversion process.
That being said, we do most of our Up-converts via the Kona cards.

I just took delivery of a new 50″ Panasonic plasma and the HD channels aren’t really all that impressive. Better, but not as great as you would think by spending all the money. I will say that the XBox 360 title, Gears of War is quite great and makes the purchase worth every penny. I also have an HD DVD player coming (that plugs into the 360 for cheap and comes with King Kong on HD DVD) so hopefully all the work that the crew does to maintain image quality that you mentioned, Graeme, will at least get passed down somewhat through that medium. I have yet to explore BluRay or HD DVD (no real reason to as yet) but now I’ll at least be able to form an educated opinion. I’m curious to see this new compression scheme, VC1, in action. I watched a free HD movie on demand the other day and I was actually impressed. I don’t know what the difference would be in a free movie on demand or a live HD channel in terms of compression, but there was a noticeable difference.
Sorry for not staying on the original topic, but it’s nice to be able to talk about these things as my buddies eyes glaze over when I start to talk about the techie stuff.

Yeah we have Charter Communications here and it seems like they only save enough bandwith for one channel to look truly sharp at any given time. Sometimes it’s ESPN, sometimes it’s HBO, sometimes it’s CBS, etc…. I’m looking into the Dish Network right now as they seem to have the most HD channels and they actually carry Food Network HD so I can finally see my work as it appears on the network!
FYI, we have one 50″ Panny Plasma and are taking delivery of the new 42″ 9 series model this week. Now all I need is one for the home. 🙂

Well, we also have PAL DV…the VHS is all NTSC at least.
Yeah, this is a very interesting project. Makes me wish we had a Kona 3. But alas…PCI-X machine…

Only thing you’re missing is the 720 – 1080i cross convert. Kona 2 can do everything else on the PCI-X side. I know you’re on the LH but just so you know, you can do all the upconversion with a PCI-X machine as well.
Trust me, you’re not missing anything on the Mac Pro’s. I only purchased it because Final Touch HD was going to come out in Universal Binary and be blazing fast with the ATI 1900 card. Well that went nowhere. And the Boris Continuum Complete 4 filters don’t work right in Intel world. I really should have just purchased another Quad G5 like I was going to originally.

Looks like I need a Kona 2 then.
I always intend to do the final output at a post facility, so I don’t need the 720p tp 1080p. But upconverting SD to HD would be nice. I know with DV the AJ-HD1200 can do it, but for BetaSP and digibeta, it would be nice.
