  • Atomos Sumo 19 Frame Rate Issue with Canon C100 Mark II

    Hello!

I’m in the process of setting up a multicam video shoot. I’m recording four Canon C100 Mark II cameras into an Atomos Sumo 19. I’m new to the Sumo and having trouble getting through to Atomos’ support team, so hoping someone around here may have some experience with it.

The issue is that I’m trying to record in 1080p24 and Sumo is not complying. I’ve learned that Canon cameras’ HDMI outputs a 1080i60 signal that needs to be interpreted by the Sumo via 3:2 pulldown. According to the Sumo manual, if the cameras are all set to 24p, I should be able to switch the input to 1080p24 (one of three frame rate options) in the menu and by waving my hand in front of the lens (to alert the pulldown) it will lock in. Unfortunately, I can’t get that far because instead of having three options of frame rates it just switches back and forth between 60i and 30p. I seem to be able to access 24p if I turn off the quad switcher and just use two cameras but this is not what we’d purchased the Sumo for…

Anybody have any idea what’s going on? Trying to record to ProRes HQ if that makes a difference.

    Thanks!

Hi Evan I use two original C100’s with a Shogun which I believe is just a scaled down Sumo.

When I first got the Shogun I had all sorts of problems trying to get my cameras to work but then I looked at the specs of the C100 and the clean HDMI signal out is always 1080 25i (I am in Pal land). As the Shogun in quad mode makes all connections as per the first camera connected and you are using a C100, not withstanding yours is a mark 2, I would suggest your problem is not the Sumo but the limitation of the HDMI out signal of the C100.

There is a way around this but it will require you purchasing extra equipment, In my case I purchased a Decimator MD-HX. It is a HDMI CROSS CONVERTER with Scaling and Frame Rate Conversion, this means you can plug your C100 into the Decimator choose the output you want in your case 1080 24p then plug in to the first connection of the Sumo and all should be sweet. Of course you will have to do this with all of your C100’s to have multi connections. I use it in reverse I have the two C100’s connected to ports 1 & 2 of the Shogun using the standard HDMI out signal of the C100’s then use the Decimator to connect a third camera a Canon EOS R which outposts native 1080 25P. I hope this is of some assistance to you.

Interesting! Thanks for the reply. I’ll look into the Decimator. Feels good to at least have one more possible option to try! Ha.
