Oh man. I need to try to create an atomic bomb/mushroom cloud using TGP/pyro because I don’t think I’m going to
get stock footage in time from our client. Anyone have any suggestions — or tutorials from even a maya/3ds/lightwave showing
    how to emulate this?

    BOOM!

Check the TP rolling emitter preset that comes with 9.5 and TP.
Should be a nice base for this.

I think i understand what your saying.

So i’m used to just blowing stuff up with tgp and the frag emitter — which doesn’t require all that much memory.
I was wondering what would be the max amount of particles that can be used in a scene….i’m running a dual core 2.5ghz with 8 gigs of ram…

this depends on the shape you use for particles.
Also 8 GB won’t help you much unless you use CINEMA 4D 64 Bit on Windows XP 64 Bit. Otherwise the maximum RAM you get for CINEMA is between 1.6 and 3.8 GB depending on system and configuration.
If you want to use more then 100.000 particles you have to increase the limit in the TP settings.
    Cheers

You shouldn’t have to use nearly that many particles if you’re using Pyrocluster.
