I have a first generation MacPro with the X1900XT video card. I’ve noticed horizontal lines flashing across my video on my computer monitors for the last several months, but I kept working because they don’t appear in my finished video. However, last week, my computer completely froze up. I’ve read some things about heat issues with this video card, but I can’t find anyone with real experience. Has anyone in this forum had a similar problem? If so, did you fix it? Do I just clean the card? If I replace it, does anyone have a suggestion for a good replacement? Most of my work is with FCP, Motion, Photoshop, and After Effects. Thanks.

Have you upgraded the card to the latest firmware?

Yes. I tried that last week. I’ve been running the computer with the side panel removed, and it seems to help. However, at some point while I’m editing, everything will freeze up. All I can do is restart with the power button.

Call Apple Tech or make an appointment with a Genius Bar. They will replace with a Revision 2 Card.

My faith in Apple’s do-the-right-thing responses ebbs and flows.

I’d like to know how this goes for you, Mitch. On the main Apple support page you will see a list of recalls and replacement offers, lower right corner, Exchanges and Repairs. An offer to replace your failed graphics card with a new rev 2 is not listed but weirder things have happened when customers contact Apple directly.

Not a Hail Mary attempt at the last minute. I simply called Apple Tech explained my problem, different than Scott’s, and within 2 minutes they were asking me for my address to OVERNIGHT a Rev 2 X1900 xt board.

I just got off the phone with Apple support. They’re sending me a new card right away, version 2. From the research I’ve done, apparently the first MacPro’s went out with the version 1 X1900 cards. You can identify them by finding a serial number on them that goes 00004, or something like that. The fan on these cards does not ramp up and down, so they tend to overheat. The replacement cards should work fine. By the way, I’ve already had to replace the fan on this card once before.

If you call Apple support, they should be aware of the issue. If they don’t, refer to Knowledge Base article #305637.

I’ll post again if I have any trouble with the replacement card.

Same exact thing happened to me. After I got the new card, I’ve noticed faster render times with Motion files in FCP.

I was having the same problem and after multiple OS reinstalls, and stripping out all non stock hardware from the mac pro, was coming here to post about it right now. Saw this thread, called apple, new card is on it’s way in spite of my warrantee being long gone. Huge thanks to the cow! Also much respect to apple for making things right.

24 hours after I called Apple, the new card was here. I’ve swapped it out, and everything looks good so far.
