ATI Radeon HD 5770, macpro1,1 2007, 2 DVI Monitors, will it work
Hi,
I got a 8800 GT card for my Macpro1,1 2007 and it turns out there are two versions, I got the wrong one and it does not work.
I could get a 8800 GT that works with my Mac Pro but am thinking it probably makes more seance to get a 5770, I have heard this is one of the card that works well with Resolve Lite.
So, can anybody confirm this will work with my Macpro1,1 2007 with Resolve and that I will be able to use my two DVI monitors?

Lastly (Bit OT I know, sorry) I am a little confused as t what connectors I would need with this card to connect 2 monitors with standard DVI, any insight would be great.

ATI Radeon 5770 (Mac Version) is okay for User Interface, and probably the Lite version will run okay in OpenCL.
Its not on the top three choices.You will need to convert the second output from DisplayPort to DVI with an interface plug. Available at your nearest friendly Apple store or wherever, not likely with the card.

Don’t quite understand you reference to user interface. This is hardware we are talking about. Also I am getting the PC version as it works with lion and is half the price used.

His reference to the GUI is that the card will work well for the purpose of processing whatever is going on in the GUI.
To process video however, it might work. But OpenCL is slower than using a GPU with CUDA. He’s just saying it’s not the optimal setup.

Now I’me confused;). My understanding was that the 5770 was CUDA, that is why it works well with Blackmagic Resolve.
As for the optimal solution I am sure my setup is not. I have a 2007 Macpro1,1 and there are much more powerful cards than the 5770. Are people saying the PC and Mac version of the 5770 are not equal in terms of GUI performance and the PC version does not work as well with FCPx/Resolve? I am not in a position to buy a new mac.

I’m not familiar with the ATI cards at all, but I’m sure you cannot use the PC version without flashing it so it works with Mac.
The tech specs should be the same, but performance wise, it’s really up to the drivers they make for Mac. Only nVidia cards (GeForce and Quadro) have CUDA, since this is made by nVidia.

Hi Ben, if you have an Apple 64bit version of the 8800 you can flash it to the 32bit version of the card relatively easily. I only mention it as you said you were on a bit of a budget and it sounds like you already have that card? I did it and it works perfectly as twy are the same card just with a different ROM. You should be able to do it in either a PC or using bootcamp – I did mine in bootcamp and from memory only had the 8800 installed. You will need to set your MP to boot windows before you put the card in as it doesn’t work at all under OSX. Use a tool called nvflash (search with a term like Nvidia or you will find the android flasher instead) and then search for Mac 8800GT 32bit rom. I found quite a good thread on that at macrumors.com (sorry I only have Internet on my phone at the moment – moving house). It wasnt the easiest to find info on, but once I found the ROM I was able to muddle my way through it 🙂 anyway that will be your cheapest bet and you will have a genuine Apple version of the card with the genuine Apple firmware, just not the FW that shipped on the card.
