  • ATI Radeon HD 3870 Mac Graphics card questions

Posted by Ian Mcfarland on November 26, 2008 at 4:41 pm

I have been looking into getting a ATI Radeon HD 3870 Mac Graphics card for my 2nd generation MacPro and I was wondering if anyone has had any issues with it and FCP 6 so far? I did have the Nvidia 8800 GFrorce GT and found that it had issues with rendering certain FXPlugins. I don’t want to get the ATI card and have the same issues so I am looking for issues.
The second part of my question is, does anyone run 2 of these cards so a 3rd/4th monitor can be run?
    thanks for any insight

Motion wonk Mark Spender has endorsed the 3870.

AFAIK, the issue with FCP6 and multiple cards has not changed yet. FxPlugs that work in Motion will not work in FCP6 if you have more than one card driving more than one display. that is, you can have as many cards as you want but you can only have displays hooked up to a single card for FCP6. You can have all the cards you want and all the displays you want hooked up to all of the them if you’re just running Motion.

Here’s a read for you on the card: https://www.barefeats.com/harper16.html

Also note it’s touted by ATI to work well with Studio… Made specifically for professional apps like Color etc..

But what are the “issues” you’re experiencing with your current card and FX plugs?
