I am trying to “stitch” together .VOB files (aka MPG) from a DVD to edit in Sony Vegas Pro 10.
When files are dropped onto timeline – after changing ext to .mpg – the audio and video files are uneven where they were split during recording (3 files @ approx 1 GB each). When pieced together, there is a small glitch (2-3 frames of black) and the audio goes out of sync.
So what I decided to do was use Avidemux to convert to AVI: MJPEG and PCM settings and combine all files into 1. The orig DVD is about 1:26:00+/- in length but after editing will be less than 1 hour.
Avidmux crashes every time I try to save project to any folder or different HDD. I’ve tried clearing all temp files, run defrag on HDD, used different DVD, and uninstalled/reinstalled the program. Have successfully performed this action before but now something is causing a crash.
Any suggestions/ideas on how else to trouble shoot or where to focus my attention?

    Using SVP 10 32-bit

    Thanks in advance.

There are commercial programs (VideoReDo is a highly recommended one) that will help you do what you want.
I’m a cheapskate and prefer to do it myself using DVD Shrink (it’s free).
Follow the advice I gave in the Import VOB Files to Timeline thread and you should be OK.

    Mike,
Thanks for the advice. It did/didn’t work for me.
The .VOB files all combined fine, but when I open/import media to timeline I get the “white screen of death” (not responding). I am wondering if that has something to do with the audio codec (AC3) that’s being dropped onto timeline? Does DVD Shrink also convert audio? I didn’t see an option for audio conversion? Suggestions?

    Thanks

    Tim, AC-3 files shouldn’t be a problem.
I’ve dropped much longer extracted DVD clips on the timeline before (using the technique I recommended) and never experienced the “white screen of death”.
I’m wondering if there’s something wrong with the way you’re doing the conversion using Avidemux?
I don’t use the program myself but, as you are aware, John Rofrano and other users have posted conversion tips here many times before.

[Mike Kujbida] “Tim, AC-3 files shouldn’t be a problem.”

I’ve read somewhere (on here?) that Sony Vegas doesn’t play nice with AC-3 files. Did I misunderstand or misread that information?

As far as having the wrong settings, I don’t know. I’ve followed the recommended settings (of John Rofrano) but every time I go to save project, the program crashes and shuts down.

    This is getting frustrating.

    Thanks for your help.

Vegas will not let you drop an AC-3 file on the timeline (licensing issues?).
The only way you can do it is if it’s already embedded in an MPEG file.
    I wish I could offer more help but unfortunately I can’t 🙁

You should import DVD’s using File | Import | DVD Camcorder Disc and let Vegas handle the rest.

I think that’s what the OP did. I’m familiar with the “tiny glitches in audio between imported dvd clips” problem. Wish someone had a fix for that

Here is a thread from another Cow Forum relating to this. Be sure and read the info on a possible workaround in Nero Vision.

That’s not how I read it. I read:

[Tim Srader] “When files are dropped onto timeline – after changing ext to .mpg”

Which means he renamed several .VOB files to .MPG files and then tried to recombine them on the timeline.

Vegas will take care of everything if you import using Vegas.

[John Rofrano] “Vegas will take care of everything if you import using Vegas.”

Whenever I’ve had to do this, Vegas does take care of everything EXCEPT for a few brief loss of audio at the beginning and end of each VOB file.
This may not be a problem most of them time but, when it is, it’s a huge problem (i.e. during a musical).
That’s when I began using the technique I recommended in the second post in this thread.
A huge thanks to John Meyer on the Sony Vegas Pro forum for pointing that method out to me.
