asterisk next someitems in after effects

When you duplicate an item, AE adds an asterisk to the end of the duplicate’s name so it is not identical to the original. or, I did I misunderstand your question?

i think in the project window the asterix means that you have changed something since saving it last. If you hit save, the asterix will go away.
