  • Assigning layer name with expression?

I need to link an illustrator file (shaped as a custom bullet) to a whole bunch of lines of text. No problems with controlling size, color, position etc – parenting and basic expressions take care of that. But I would also like to name those illustrator files – now layers in a comp – in a fashion relating to their parent’s names. Any way of doing it without me actualy having to type them?

You would need a JSX script, not an expression. Expressions cannot change a layer’s name. Look at some of the demo scripts (Shapetime Insanity, SortbyInpoint, DuplicatewithChildren) to find some code snippets in there. This should allow you to hack together a script you can work with. You could also try AEnhancers, perhaps you will find something usabel there.
