Assign a different (sub)role to each audio channel
Posted by Fabien Daguerre on October 15, 2011 at 5:46 pmI haven’t found a way to assign a role or a subrole to each of my 2 audio channels per clip. E.g. HF & Perch.
I mean assigning it directly in the events browser or in the inspector, before editing, to all of the clips in the same time.
I know I can do “open in timeline” for each clip but I’ve got many clips to do so…T. Payton replied 14 years, 6 months ago 3 Members · 9 Replies -

In the browser, you can show the Roles column and assign them there before editing.

October 15, 2011 at 9:56 pmIt looks like you don’t have to break them apart if the clip audio intelf is assigned to dual mono (or other mono format) in the inspector. Then the audio tracks will be broken apart automatically and from there you can assign each audio track a different roll.
I just did it and it works well. Great idea BTW, I can see lots of uses for this. Can’t wait for FCP X to get a real mixer where roles become channels in the mixer. Then we can gave some very good control over audio.

Can you explain broken apart automatically? You mean when you expand clips in the primary?

October 15, 2011 at 10:19 pmIt’s a role the role should play IMHO.
But indeed I don’t see a way to do this to a cluster of clips, directly in the inspector.
You can break apart some clips in the timeline, but then lose the benefit of grouped audio/video.
And with differents roles to each channel, you could mute or solo all your HF track without even expanding or breaking apart the audio, even without selecting the clips.
You also can do “open in timeline” to clips, BUT one by one.
But there should be a way, in the inspector, like we can disable CH1 or CH2, to assign a specific role to one channel only, and another to the other channel.
Sorry for bad English… -

October 16, 2011 at 1:38 amSee if this makes sense:
I’ve selected a clip. Notice in the inspecter the roles under info:
Now on the same clip under audio it is set to stereo and opening that clip in the timeline there is one stereo track:
Selecting the clip again in the even browser and changing to dual mono, the timeline now shows two audio tracks:
BTW. I didn’t close the timeline it just automatically expanded:
Now in the timeline select your tracks and in the info window assign the role:
Now in the Event Browser or the info window you can see the multiple audio roles:
So now just use the clip normally and edit away with multiple roles.
Roles are VERY powerful.
Enjoy!
