    and while i’m at it…

just got new comp. and what with one thing and another…

everything is on c: ie, system and programs.

screwed up with something and decided to simply use asr to restore. it’s ok, but every time i have to reregister photoshop (cs), and repair v5.

would i be better off using ghost? would this avoind reregistering?

    suggestions most welcome…

Hey Leslie……….forget both those programs, if you want to back up your C: drive. Go with Drive Image, it’s rock solid, and won’t f— things up!! You will need a second hard drive to use it, but hopefully you have one of those, for your raw video footage, etc. With Drive Image you can backup a perfect system, and if anything goes wrong, you can use your latest Image to re-load your system and be up and running within half an hour!! All the Best……….!! Remember always to keep your data on drives other than your C: Drive. Audio/Video files etc………that way backup’s a breeze.

I manage a school system network (6000 PCs). Ghost has been the best product for imaging and restoring hard drives.

I believe Drive Image and Ghost are now both owned by the same company. I used Drive Image through Win2K. The version I had, though, would not work with XP. Instead of upgrading I decided to go with TrueImage.

Leslie, I use Ghost, it works great for me.

After making your first perfect system backup w/program updates, write down on paper any NEW updates/additions you’ll install to this drive. That way, when you need to restore this Ghost backup, you’ll know what to add to it. Then, you can make a NEW Ghost backup.

I’ve seen Ghost wipe out entire hard drives! It’s up to you. Powerquest makes Drive Image by the way, and I use it on XP. So I don’t know what the above poster means. Which ever you choose, backup is essential.

Yes, I know PowerQuest makes both Drive Image and Partition Magic. I own both. I thought I had heard that Symantec (who owns Ghost) had purchased PowerQuest. I just did a quick check and went to http://www.powerquest.com and in the upper left-hand corner is a Symantec logo. So it appears, to me, that both Ghost and Drive Image are owned by Symantec.

I’ve had terrible luck with Ghost. Our station stopped using it too–corrupted ghost files 3/4 of the time regardless of medium. Now we use Acronis True Image

    https://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

    Much happier. And cheap.
