aspect ratio with exporting youtube SD
Hello,
I am exporting DV footage from my MBP using 10.5.5, media 100 Producer 13.0 with QT 7.5.0.
When I export to h.264 at NTSC 720 x 480 4:3 and view it, it is squished and fat. (In other words QT player is not reading it as 4:3 and playing the rectangular pixels as if they were square. It is supposed to do so with H.264 footage.) However, if I export the same footage in Final Cut, using the same QT settings, the footage plays correctly. What’s going on here?
I realize that I can use the 640×480 settings and will do so, and I would like to understand how Media 100 works.
Also, to my eye, the 4:3 version (from both programs) looks slightly thinner than the footage does when playing the dv tape on a monitor. Any thoughts there?

Hmmm…interesting.
I’ll need to take a look at this tomorrow. To be clear, is this going direct out of M100 via the “Other > QuickTime” choices in the Export from Edit Suite dialog, correct?

In the meantime, what about exporting By-Reference from M100 and then exporting THAT from QT Pro to .h264?

OK, I suspected as much.
I’ll run it by the engineer in charge of that area of the application and see what they have to say. I know that it’s a tricky area because it’s not really all our code. We’re basically invoking QuickTime at that point and trying to hand them a “movie” to work with before we’ve actually even made said movie.

I need to export some programmes as AVI files. Although the films are 16×9, they export as 4×3 (as do self-contained and by reference movies. I also need to reduce the size to 384×216. Any suggestions?

Actually they export in their native pixel dimensions, which is 720*576 or 720*486, which is absolutely correct. If you want to convert them to AVI files, you should use a tool like Cleaner, Compressor, Episode or whatever to convert to AVI and to scale to the needed size. For viewing in QuickTime player you simply can scale the file to a 16:9 aspect by setting the video scaled size to 1024*576 (PAL) or 864*486 (NTSC) in the Video Properties window of the QuickTime player.
