Using Compressor, I exported a self contained QT file that was from a P2 sequence (if that makes any sense) from FCP 5.1.4. In other words, it was “widescreen”, no crop. I used the “Best 90 min. 16:9” setting for the compression. Once I was finished, I imported that into DVDSP, created a track, dropped the files in the track and made the track’s display mode “16:9 Pan-Scan”.

It looks great if I play the DVD on my computer, I can see the whole screen. However, when I play it back on an NTSC monitor that can switch from 4:3 to 16:9, I can’t see the entire screen as it plays back the video. It looks great in 4:3 (isn’t squished) but I loose a considerable amount of the image on both sides.

I am concerned as to what display is needed to make this look right. Will it only play back right on a “widescreen” monitor? What display mode do I use to keep the full original 16:9 aspect ratio? DVDSP has three options: (1) 16:9 Pan-Scan (2) 16:9 Letterbox (3) Pan-Scan & Letterbox. Can’t I just make a 16:9 DVD out of DVDSP?

    Thank you,

    Derek

The video should normally be set in DVDSP as 16:9 Letterbox, it is displaying correctly as Pan and Scan but unless you program was shot and edited with that in mind you normally lose important info. Letterbox is the most used conversion for 4:3 TV.

The option (3) Pan&Scan or Letterbox leaves the conversion up to the end viewer and it determined by how they set the DVD Players preferences up.

on most players the pan & scan setting = 16:9 cropped on the sides.

just set it for 16×9 letterbox and it will work out for everyone.
