I use Sony HVR-Z1’s which I capture in HDV 50i PAL. I squeeze this down to PAL on capture and just capture each tape as it is weddings. I am not really interested in batch capture, or logging!

I set the sequence to PAL/Widescreen and all the settings I think are correct. I ought to add at this point that I am an ex premiere user so I would scrub the footage in the viewer and drop it into the sequence..I have just watched a tutorial where the guy dropped all the footage into the squence and scrubbed the sequence in the viewer and set the footage to match the sequence settings. I havent tried that and it seems a bit counter productive for 4-6 whole tapes.

When I am scrubbing the footage all goes well, then it will start scrubbing the footage at 4:3 and entering it to the sequence that was as well. Of course it is distorted like that. The only way of fixinf it I have found is to set the distortion to -33.33 which is the aspect ratio for PAL for the whole tape/file.

Now the only problem I have is I have to re-render each file I drop in or set the sequence now to 4:3/Square and accept the top and bottom letterboxing.

On premiere it was as simple case of a PAL 720×576 project and it would fill the whole screen and no problems with the footage etc.

I realise some people set the project to 4:3 Letterboxed so it can be watched by everyone but most if not all the couples I deliver to in the UK now have widescreen TV’s so I dont want to start going down the 4:3 route if there is a qorkaround or I am doing something wrong!

    Many thanks..

    Jon,

Welcome in from the dark side…

FCP is way different from what you know, but once you wrap your brain around it you’ll realize it’s more similar than you might have imagined.

In any case, please watch the following tutorial, which shows you very simply, concisely, and precisely how to setup projects in FCP using the Easy Setups that the folks at Apple have worked very hard to perfect. I assure you, if you follow Walter’s tutorial every single time you begin a new project, you will go on to fame and fortune, and you’ll spend your time being creative rather than wondering why things aren’t working as expected.
