    This is an offshoot of a question I posted yesterday in these forums.

    I have a project shot on 16mm, transferred to DVCPro50, and edited in final cut. Codec was DV50 until final render, which was uncompressed 10 bit. Frame size 720×480, 3:2. Aspect ratio NTSC 601/DV, field dominance none. No anamorphic.

    Now, when I get it out of DVDSP, it doesn’t look quite right. I’m assuming its probably because its a 16:9 image in a 4:3 sequence, with anamorphic unchecked, probably because the original capture settings were wrong (this was over 2 years ago). Is there anything I can do to fix this? By the time it his my HDTV, I have black bars on the top and bottom, and everything looks squished. I was cropping to 1:66 (shooting ratio) previously but I’ve been told that can cause quite a bit of artifacting. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I’d really appreciate it.

    Why go 10-bit uncompressed, if you are just going to make a DVD? DV50 is digibeta quality…don’t need to really leave that. Besides, 10-bit uncompressed frame size is 720×486…DV50 and DV is 720×480. But again, I don’t think you need to leave that codec.

    If your footage is 16:9…why are you editing in a 4:3 sequence? You should be in an anamorphic 16:9 sequence setting. Then your exports will fill the screen.

    Thanks for your response Shane. I’ve been bouncing ideas off myself, and its good to get some outside input.

    I went uncompressed for the final sequence because it made all my text look a lot better, and I’ve read some tutorials supporting the workflow of having your final sequence be uncompressed, so no further compression is added. I’m assuming that is incorrect?

    I agree completely with the anamorphic thing. The problem is…I’m not sure why. The original capture and sequence settings were set up by an awful professor of mine when I was very very green in editing. Years later, I see all the problems, but getting ready for delivery, recapture is out of the question. I don’t have anamorphic on because at this point it completely stretches out the image. Is there any thing I can do to make that right at this stage of the game?

    Uncompressed will look better. a tad better than DV50…look at both and see. But will they STILL look that good when you compress for DVD after that?

    Was the footage captured 16:9 within a 4:3 frame? If so, and recapture is out of the question, then you are stuck with that for this project.

    I have a feeling it was. It was so long ago I don’t remember the specifics. I wish I didn’t have to crop in compressor to make them look normal, because it produces a pretty crappy image. And since its not HD I don’t have much play to work with as far as zooming into the image.
