Aspect Ratio Issues
Hello all!
Ok so I’m aware there have been lots of postings in regards to aspect ratio and dealing with various ways of mixing stuff but i couldn’t find anything which addresses this specifically for what i need- I’m working on a series of videos to be show on a projector, one of them was shot on a sony Z1 in HDV 16×9, but unfortunately the other 3 were shot on a Panasonic DVX100 (PAL) at 4×3 aspect ratio. Now what Ive done is changed all the settings to HD 960×720 because otherwise I have to crop TOO much from the 4:3 stuff OR if i go the other way i have to squeeze the 16:9 stuff too much.As it stands, the squashes are noticeable, but not horrific, and the un-video-trained audience probably wont know/care anyway, but i was wondering, is this ‘compromise’ I’ve made acceptable? Will it look absurd on a big screen? Will I have issues putting all 3 shorts onto a single DVD because of this?
If not, what steps should I take to make them look as normal as possible?

Rephrase the question a bit… you’re having to mix how much HDV with DV, and is 3/4 of the footage SD? I’d stay there for sure, and not upconvert most of the footage only to down convert it back for a DVD….
And all the DV is going into it’s own programs where the HDV stands in it’s own program? If so stay HD with HDV and stay native with the 4’3 video. will look better the less you change the formats around…

No the problem is that they are all going to end up in one “movie” with black between them, but are being edited in separate sequences. As such I was wondering what the best middle ground is sothat when I do my final export they all look the same in regards to aspect ratio because the as stuff is 4:3 and the hdv stuff is 16:9. If I downscale the hdv stuff it all look very squished but if I upscale the 4:3 sd stuff to look the same it will look stretched, and cropping is not ideal, again hence the “middle ground” of the smaller Hd because it means less cropping, less squeezing etc but I didn’t know if there’s a better way when in this scenario?

Edit it all natively. It will change aspect ratios but that’s preferable to recompressing all of the footage. If you can’t, then edit it all in the HDV sequence, and crop it rather than stretch the picture around IMHO. You’d be best off working in ProRes sequence BTW. Same size as your HDV material.
