I’ve had this problem ever since I re-installed Sony Vegas 8 on my computer – No matter what settings I have on, exported footage always looks either too squished or too stretched out and never the same aspect ratio that it was as a source file or when I was editing it.

I know I’m doing something wrong, and I was told that clicking the ‘Stretch video to fill output frame size (do not letterbox)’ option before exporting would fix it, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference at all.

Does anyone know how I could fix this problem? Or at least some better settings to have on when exporting for a better end product?

The footage I’m currently working with is 720 pixels wide and 576 high, if that helps?

[Melz Bob] “The footage I’m currently working with is 720 pixels wide and 576 high, if that helps?”

That suggests that you are using PAL footage. Is it 4:3 or 16:9 (widescreen)? What is the Pixel Aspect Ratio?

The secret is to keep your project and render settings the same as your footage. Make sure the pixel aspect ratio matches. What is your target delivery format? DVD?

It’s 4:3 due to an error with the camera I think, or at least it’s only widescreen if you count the black bars on each side.

I’m not sure what the pixel aspect ratio is either sorry, is there a way I can find out?

And the hope is that we could get it onto a DVD, but otherwise it would be an AVI file.

As JR suggested…set you project setting to where it looks correct. Pixel aspect for pal is ether 1.09 for 4:3 or 1.45 for 16:9…if you messed up your cam settings get it as close as you can to looking good and then zoom in with the crop function to remove any residual bars that may be apparent…

It sounds like your camera shoots 4:3 and you’ve placed it in a 16:9 project. Set your project to PAL DV (720×576, 25.000 fps) adn the black bars should go away.
