aspect ratio changing in QT
Posted by Dean Mikulla on May 26, 2008 at 10:57 pmI’m exporting a short clip using QT conversion to .mov for my web site.
I filmed and edited in 16×9 anamorphic. All settings and preferences in FCE 3.0 are set to edit in 16×9. I’m pretty sure I chose all the correct options during export , but when i view the final file ( on my mac ) it looks slightly stretched (vertically). I tried both the crop/letterbox options during export. When I put it on the web site, and look at it, it is stretched vertically even more. I’m shooting for that nice wide thin screen I see in edit window during edit.
What I my doing wrong. Here is the linkhttps://www.marshallmovies.net/solo.mov

May 27, 2008 at 4:29 amTo make an SD anamorphic play correct aspect on a web site you need to output the file in a 16:9 ration. For example a PAL SD frame is 720 x 576. This is 4:3 ratio. To unsqueeze the anamorphic, make the ratio 1024 x 576 which is 16:9.
If you need smaller frame sizes then get your calculator out and make sure the horizontal to vertical ratios are 16:9 or just divide both 1024 and 576 by the same number to reduce the frame size.

May 27, 2008 at 5:43 amNo Dean. You haven’t set all the parameter properly. I guess you choose the correct wide and high, but you forgot to change the pixels aspect ratio. Now QT is playing your pixels as squared, but you forgot to set this kind of pixels on your exporting.

May 27, 2008 at 5:09 pmThis is a common problem. Just to to QT player and change the frame size to 720 x 405 if it’s DV.

May 27, 2008 at 8:25 pmGo to your exported QUICKTIME file. Hold down the apple key and than the letter J, This will open up a window that allows you to make adjustments. Click on video track and than “visual settings”. Uncheck “preserve aspect ratio”. Put in your 16:9 settings. For example 1920 x 1080. Re-check preserve aspect ratio. Than close the adjustment window. Close your quicktime window…when it asks if you want to save changes click yes. Reopen your file and you should be good to go.

You shouldn’t do that.
I’ve been doing that long time. Setting 1024×576 (PAL) to get the proper aspect ratio in QT.
In the past, no problem. FC would recognize the clip as 720×576 PAL pixels.
But with the last QT versions is not like that anymore.
Now FC recognize the clips as 1024×576 SQUARE PIXELS.
So change the parameter to watch the movie BUT DON”T SAVE THE CHANGES.
If you do so when you set your DV movie in a DV sequence you will get the Green line on top.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

May 28, 2008 at 6:34 pmRafael,
Since we don’t know what version of QUICKTIME is being used my suggestion stands. Since he is editing on FInal Cut Express chances are he’s not working with the latest QUICKTIME. Also, he’s not looking to edit the QUICKTIME he want’s to export and view on his Mac. Therefore the green line is not an issue.

May 28, 2008 at 10:20 pmHavent tried anything yet , ( still at work today) , but I do regularly update QT, I should’ve included the current version in my original post, my bad, but I just updated a day or two ago while trying to figure this all out. I will start by Exporting to Quicktime movie, H.264, and going in video settings and choosing the calculated 16:9 ratio resolution.
Thanks again

May 29, 2008 at 2:50 am720×405 did it, I see as long as I keep it in the 16:9 ratio. Not sure when the pixels get squeezed or unsqueezed, in the camera,FCE HD or QT , but Thankks for all the replies.
You guys Rip!
