  • Aspect Ratio changes on external monitor and fullscreen mode!

Posted by Dustin Brown on June 25, 2011 at 2:30 am

    Hi,

I’m editing Red footage in FCP 7 that was been converted to ProRes 422. It was shot in 2:1 so the aspect ratio is 2240×960. When I play footage in the timeline the aspect ratio stays the same. However, when I go to fullscreen or Cmd F12 and play the timeline, the footage is stretched to what looks like 16:9. It also does this when playing to an external monitor.

I also tried playing back footage in another sequence that is Redcode not ProRes. The aspect ratio is preserved when I play it fullscreen and the stretch does not happen. Only on the ProRes footage and timeline do I get this problem and only when playing in fullscreen or to an external monitor.

I don’t know how to fix this but it is a big problem when watching my edit. Does this have to do with ProRes? What can I do to fix this?

    Thanks!

One detail to add that might help…

The aspect ratio plays fine in the canvas. When I got to fullscreen view external video all frames, at first the aspect ratio is fine. Only once I press spacebar to play does it expand it to 16:9. When I press spacebar again to stop, it goes back to the 2:1 aspect ratio.

    Dustin you say 2:1 and 2240 x 960. That’s a mismatch.
    2:1 is 2048×1024.

is all about the non-standard sizes you are using.
FC can’t put out that signal, video cards can’t manage and monitors won’t accept it.
Anyway, the monitor you have to look at, is the Canvas, and set it to 100%. Other monitoring options in FC (full screen, Video Out,..) will depends on many other factors.
