Aspect Ratio
Hello,
We are applying for a film festival with our animation short. We scanned all of our frames at the aspect ratio of 4960×7015. And edited them on Photoshop, export as PNG sequences in 4096×2672.
And we made the film on After Effects with the 4096×2160 ratio. I am confused by the festival guidelines since there is not an option of 4096×2160. Is this aspect ratio not suitable for screenings? Should I change the aspect ratio of every composition in my project and convert them to Full 4K which is 4096×2304? But then I will have scale them and I don’t want them to lose quality.

What are the festival guidelines? If they’re showing DCPs the flat 4K is 3996×2160 (1,85:1) and scope 4k is 4096×1716 (2,39:1).

Actually I have to select my film’s ratio on the online form and 4096×2160 is not an option. They have Full 4K, and other ratios and “Unknown” is an option. But I am confused because the 4096×2160 is not listed. Why could it be? Is it not a common option? Do you think I should select “Unknown” and apply with this ratio or convert each compositions and export it as full 4K, if it is more common ratio and if it is that vital to have my ratio that way?

Well, you could export everything in 4096 × 2304 and letterbox them. You shouldn’t have to convert the comps to do that, just change the output module crop settings to the proper negative values (which should be -72). Make sure the comps bg color is black though.
Even better, queue everything in Media Encoder and create a preset there.Not an elegant solution though, so I would probably go with Unknown and specify the 1.90 ratio if there is an option to add comments or notes.
