i creatied a circle in photoshop 720×480, i imprt the footage in finalcut with the sequence set to 720×480 ntsc dv, aspect ratio to ntsc-ccir 601dv and compressor to dvcpro50. the circle looks fine on the computer screen but on the tv monitor it looks oval. the out put is set to aja kona 525i 29.97 8 bit 720×486.

when i exprot the video from final cut to after effects, i have my comp set to ntsc dv 720×480 , aspect ratio to D1/DV ntsc 0.9.. in my comp window the circle look good and on the monitor it look ovel when i set the picture aspect ratio to d1/dv ntsc 0.9.

when i change the pixel aspect ratio to square pixels it looks oval on the comp window but fine on the monitor.

would anyone know how to make the circle look the same on the computer screen to the tv and when i render.

    thanks

In the Photoshop document in which you created the circle are you using the NTSC DV 720×480 preset? Make sure that it’s set to 0.9 Pixel Aspect Ratio and not Square Pixels (Image > Pixel Aspect Ratio). If that’s all well and good could you tell me which way the circle appears to be stretched on the monitor (squashed or extended horizontally)?

Make sure you’re using Pixel Aspect Ratio preview in AE as well (a toggle switch below the comp preview screen on the right side, next to the fast preview preferences).

My intuition says that when the circle was drawn in Photoshop it was drawn with a 1.0 Pixel Aspect Ratio (Square Pixel).

it’s most likely that the image needs to be interpreted as square pixels so that it looks oval in the composition and correct on tv
