Asking to much from my system?
I keep getting dropped frames and it is getting really frustrating. I am editing in FC 7 on a MAC PRO 2.66 quad core with 6 gigs ram with a internal RAID. I get read/write speeds of 315/325.
My project is in 1080 29.97 Apple Pro Res HQ. On video track one I have a 20 second clip that has a fxfactory plugin added to it. A little 3D and motion. On video track 2 I have a PSD file with motion added to it as well. When not rendered the sequence will not not play more than two frames before it drops frames. Once rendered I can play for about 5 seconds, then the frames drop. I have tried changing the playback from dynamic to high, and lowered the amount of real time audio tracks from 8 to 4. My RT is set to safe.
Is there just to much going on in terms of motion, 3D, and what not for my system to handle? Am I missing any other setting?

I take it all your render files are set to go to the RAID?
Have you made the internal RAID out of 3 disks and then have a single a your boot drive?Peter

If you’re rendering to that raid, it should playback just fine. At that point it’s just playing back a video stream.
There’s no way in heck that it’s going to play back anything more than a frame or two before hiccuping before it’s rendered. And Fx Factory plugin? Like what, volumetrix? Those plugins are the equivalent of a hand made effect with 5-10 layers of blur, glow, color correction, levels, etc. Then you’ve got 3D and a psd file with motion added to it? Yeah, not going to play back.
But for a better editing experience, always edit with RT set on “unlimited” and turn off warn of dropped frames. You’ll see when it’s dropping frames, but at least you’ll still see it stutter through effects instead of giving up. You’re going to have to render everything anyway in the end.
i never understood the safe setting for RT.
