  • Artifacts after keying…

Posted by Ed Gilbert on July 21, 2009 at 10:45 pm

I’m keying out some footage done on a green screen. I’m getting a decent key. However, the two people in the scene are wearing black shirts. The black in those shirts is for lack of a better word, pixelating in big blocks through various shades of the black. Before the key the shirts look great… afterward they look like hell with the cycling pixlization. I tried cranking up the contrast and that does seem to knock it down but sometimes at the detrement of the quality of the rest of the shot.

Am I doing something wrong? I’m using Keylight 1.2.

I’d appreciate any suggestions or pointers.

    Thanks,

    ED

You don’t say what format you’re keying from. This could be an artefact from keying a video with low colour sampling (DV, HDV etc.).

Try switching Keylight to “Intermediate VIew” instead of “Final”. This turns off the spill suppression, so use another filter to fix any spill. Spill Suppressor or even Hue/Saturation will work a treat.

    Hope that helps,
    Ben

Sorry… the footage was HDV. 1440X1080. I actually figured out something that worked well.

Using the Status View setting in Keylight showed the elements I was seeing the artifacting from. I then clicked on those using the Alpha Bias dropper. That did the trick. I had to tweak some of the other Matte settings but that took care of the problem. Just a case of not fully knowing all the parts of a tool. Sometimes I get in too much of a hurry to get something done and miss important little points!

    Thanks for the reply!

Ed, thanks for closing your thread with a workable solution. Hardly anyone ever does that around here.
