  • Artifacting around FCP Text with Drop Shadow

Posted by Shaon Reed on September 20, 2006 at 4:38 pm

Having a problem with the built in Text on FCP 5.1. The text looks fine when unrendered but when we render it out there are green atifacts around the outside of the Text. Kind of like a poorly keyed graphic. The only thing we can find is that this only happens when we are using the drop shadow inside the motion tab. We noticed this occasionally in FCP 4.5 where this project was created and it was fine there. We upgraded and to 5.1 and the artifacting began. Anyone run across this? Thanks!

For some reason it does this if you are rendering in high precision YUV. You can either disable high-precision YUV in the video processing tab, or always do compositing with drop shadows in another app such as motion or AE.

There’s a built in shadow in Title 3D, which you should be using anyway.

And if you are working on a DV timeline, this may be unavoidable. That is the DV compression at work.

    Hi Shaon,
Try just a little bit of Gaussian Blur to the text.

this happens in 10 bit sequences and it’s a bug. Title 3d is the way to go. Turning off high precision yuv will render your timeline in 8 bit, you don’t want that if you are working 10 bit. If you need to reposition the text suing title 3d, do it from within the filter tab and not the motion tab. FCP/Boris will keep it vector based at that point.
