  Art outside the artboard is gone

  I’m working on CS5, I opened a document from a coworker that was said to have been “made with a more recent version of Illustrator”.
  I worked outside the artboard a lot.
  I saved – I believe to CS5! – and then when I reopened the Illustrator file there was nothing outside the artboard.
  Hours of work lost? Or is it just “masked”? This is insane. I’m using TimeMachine, is there a cache file somewhere in my system where I might be able to gather my work?
