In AE or even my old DVStorm software this would be no big deal to do. But I can’t figure out how to do this just within PPro for several identical cutaway shots in a 2-hour multicam project…

I shot a 4 cam 4 hour seminar that has been sync’d and multicam edited to a single 4 hr avi file. Then, I edited that down to about 2 hours. NOW I get the request from the client that he doesn’t like a sign that appears in one of the camera shots. Fortunately, it is a locked-down camera, so if I can find a way to apply a blur filter to just the area over the sign (without being too obvious), that would be ideal. I found the compound blur effect allows multi-point masking by referring to another clip to define the area, but this seems incredibly cumbersome. Any other options?

Using a track matte is one way, but you can do the same thing using a garbage matte. Put a copy of the same clip right above it and select the area to be blured using a garbage matte. Then blur the upper clip.

The advantage of a track matte is that you can blur the edges. That is not possible with a garbage matte. I often use a garbage matte to define an area, then use levels to darken the entire section and use that to help create the track matte. That way it can be softened, while still be able to be animated.

    Steven,

Did you ever post a challenge and then hit yourself in the forehead and yell “DOH!” because you realized you knew the answer? I knew about just duplicating the clip and garbage matting it out, but I didn’t know about the track matte having the edge blur capability. The edge is the biggest challenge… I’ve applied my blur after the garbage matte, so the effect would be the same, right?

    Thank you for your help.

If the sign is in an area where there is no movement in front of it, try exporting a frame with the item to be deleted and opening it in Photoshop. Run a de-interlace filter on the image. Next use the clone tool to delete the sign. Use the slection tool to slect an area slightly larger than the sign. Import that selection into premiere and use the position tool to place it over the sign on you avi clip.

A bit more of a process than using a matte but gives greater control of what you want to block out.

    Cheers.

It is not the same at all. No. The problem is that you blur the footage, not the edges. I use the garbage matte to help me make a track matte. Or, you could just use a title as a track matte. The titler allows you to draw shapes. You blur those shapes and it makes it blend in better

    Steven,

I don’t quite understand your distinction on this… By my applying the blur AFTER the garbage matte in the effects panel, I successfully blurred the edges of the defined matte. No hard matte edges remain. Am I missing something on this?

Well I’ll be a Monkey’s Uncle. I just learned something.

I created a project that I was going to post to prove that it didn’t work that way, and it works that way.

Mostly I use garbage mattes for split screen kind of things so a blur is not involved. Therefore I need to blur the edges a different way. But in this case, it worked perfectly. Thanks for helping me come to that realization.

Gee, since I have somehow managed to teach the gurus, does this qualify me to have my picture at the top of the forum? If so, here it is:

I’d really appreciate it, Uncle Steven & Uncle Mike.

I was going to make some sort of smart-aleck comment about that picture already being above Tim’s name at the top of the forum, but I realized Tim is better looking than I am so I had better just leave it alone. And the monkey is a LOT cuter than I am.
