We have 80 hours of U-Matic tape we want to digitize, put watermarks on, and post to the internet and also have non-watermarked option available for purchase.

I was going to capture everything into the Avid, ideally having a 3/4″ deck directly hooked up to the Adrenaline. I am wondering what the best resolution to capture at would be to maintain the highest quality but also take into consideration hard drive space.

U-matic tapes have 330 horizontal lines per frame, but they are not the original, the footage is from the late 50’s/early 60’s and they were dubbed at some point in the mid-90’s. The quality is excellent so I would like to maintain as much of it as possible.

Could I get away with using DV 25 411 without taking a big hit in quality or should I stick with 2×1 or 1×1?

    Thanks.

to answer your question, yes but I’d loop through and archive to a new media at the same time. In many cases, you’ll only get one pass with those old oxide tapes and you won’t be able to play them again.
You can archice these on their own firewire drive but I’d make hard copies of each tape if I were you.

    I’d archive to an Ampex AVR1 2inch just to be safe….sorry couldn’t help myself….
