Archiving footage for PC based clients
Hi,
I have a client who would understandably like to have a digital archive of all the footage we have amassed for him over the years.
I have kept this footage on a hard drive and it is variously Pro Res 422 HD and SD
Is there a way I can transfer this onto a drive for a PC where it might be usable by the client. Lets assume he only has PC based systems…
I would welcome any thoughts. Alot of this footage is over 4gb in size.
I have in the past noticed that Quicktime files transferred onto a PC drive don’t play.

Hi Adrian,
You only need the last QT for Window to be able to play Prores files.
You don’t need any other software.

Thanks as ever for the response.
I have stumbled somehow on this. From a networked PC with external hard drive attached, I have pulled the files from the mac raid and copied them onto the drive.
Now when I try to access those files on the PC they come up as green pixels and noise. I am running QT 7.6.4 on the PC.
Is there a corruption happening here?
I am grateful for your advice.

Is it true that the Windows ProRes component only allows playback (decode) of ProRes movies and not writing (encode) of them? In other words, without Final Cut Studio, you can’t render from After Effects to ProRes, for example. Thanks.

Hi Tom,
You are right. The” Readers” are just the “Decompressor” part of the codec.
Lets you open the file to be processed.
To export again to the same codec you need the other half of the formula and that, in the case of Prores, is reserved to the FCS users and payers.
QT Player is just a big Reader. For few bucks, QT Pro gives you the “Writer” options. But no this one:-)
