Archiving captured footage

Why not just drag the files to another drive or two?

I wou’dn’t use that just becuase it’s not compatible with naything else.

Unpractical you mean? No, it’s actually the opposite. If you don’t create a camera archive in FCPx, you can use the QT file anywhere else, including in other applications (Motion, Compressor).
Just copy those files over to another drive or two and keep those as backups.
