Archiving Canon 7D Files to a .dmg
Hey all…
As I get ready to transition to FCP X, I have a question.
In FCP 7, after I shoot a bunch of footage on my 7d, the first thing I do is archive a protection disc image of the card using the Canon plug in and then dump it onto an archive drive. Then I go ahead and import the footage selects I want into my project in FCP. Fairly straightforward process.
My question…How do I do this in FCP X? No Canon plug in obviously. So how do I create a disc image of my card for archiving and protection in FCP X?

Use the Disk Utility to create the .dmg and fill it with the card content.

You just import the h264s into FCPX, no log and transfer needed.
FCPX has a “Create Camera Archive” function.
You can create a dmg using Disk Utility if you want as well.

I have two 2-TB drives connected to my iMac. I download the 7D files to one, then import to an event on the other. I’m guessing there’s another step for serious safety by backing up the event folder too. I’d love to hear how others are doing this.

I guess you should back up your stuff after has been tagged and the metadata has been added.
Once made the .dmg, the contents can’t be modified.

“3 copies are better than 2 copes are better than one copy. It’s a good idea to back up the event and project files, too.
