Now that I have 59 8-gig cards shot for an important project, and they fill up most of a 500-gig drive, it’s clear that we need an archive system asap. I’ve looked at SDLT and LTO. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations? I’ve never used either, but I need to make a choice soon.

    Thanks in advance

For Peristroika, we used DVD-DL. Verbatim & Ritek disks were around $1.80 each, with shipping when I bought them in August. We made 2 backups for each of the 76 cards that we shot. Plus the 2 sets of hard drives. We’re verrrry into redundancy.

Thanks, Arnie. Forgive my ignornance, but can you simply backup an 8-gig file to DL DVD, or do you have to divide it? That is, can you make a continuous backup to the DVD or does it require splitting your files in half?

You can copy the entire disk contents, directory structure intact, to the DL DVD. A DL DVD is around 8.5 GB. When the 16 & 32 gig cards come out, though, it’ll be time to switch to Blue Ray.
