Applying SmoothCam filter to edited clip
I’m in the process of finishing up the final cut of a music video I directed. Some of the clips are a little shaky and I want to stabilize them using the SmoothCam filter.
I’ve found, though, that when I apply the filter to the clips in the timeline, the filter references the entirety of the source clip rather than just the section that is being used in the timeline. This results in some rather drastic scaling since there are sometimes parts in the unused portion of the clip that are much shakier.
Is there some way to apply this filter only to the section of the clip that is in use? Perhaps there is a way to make all of the clips in the timeline independent subclips?

Export a self contained Quicktime Movie of the shot.
Re-import it and place it on a track above the original shot.
Apply smooth cam to the new re-imported clip -
Hey John, thanks for the reply. This seems like it should work, but do you or anyone else know of a way to simply disassociate the clip in the timeline with the original clip in the browser while preserving the edited clip’s in and out points?

Not tried this – but have you tried calling the clip up in the timeline and making it a subclip? You’ll probably have to drop it back into the timeline from the browser.
See if that helps – otherwise it’s an export…

The behaviour of analysing the whole clip has apparently been fixed in FCP 7 although I haven’t had a chance to test that yet. Otherwise making a new clip via QT export is the only way I know of.

Not fixed in FCP yet, but it is in Motion. Send your clip to Motion for all stabilizing and speed effects.
