What do you mean by “media FX”?

In the project media window, you can right click on an imported media and select “Media Fx…” this allows you to add effects to the media itself which propagates to all of its instances on your various tracks.

I was pretty sure that’s what you meant but I wanted to make sure.

In your initial question, you said:
I have a bunch of images that I want to chroma key all the same color. They are already used in lots of different places in my project so individually selecting all of them and adding a video fx is not the way to go.
To my way of thinking, this is the only way to go so I’m curious as to why you don’t think so.

Alright, how can someone insert a video event fx plugin before the rest of the effects for multiple video events?

If I understand you well, then it is quit easy:
First add the FX you want to add to just a random (dummy) event (you will remove this effect afterwards) and copy the event.
Then select all the events you want the fx added to in the project media tab as you suggested. Now instead of adding an media fx, just right click and select SELECT TIMELINE EVENTS.
Then right click on one of the selected events on the timeline and select PASTE EVENT ATTRIBUTES. Now you just have to remove the fx from the dummy event and you are done.

Won’t that just add the effect at the end of each events effects chain? What if you need the effect before the effects chain?

Hmmm, I like problems that get more complicated every time, but the proper answer is also getting more complicated.

Suppose that the other effects on all the events involved are all identical. Then you can select all the involved events via the SELECT TIMELINE EVENTS trick, remove all the effects that are present already with the use of a script and simply add the effects by copy (from the dummy event) and PASTE attribute.

But if those FX are not identical for all the involved events…

7 years later and several versions of Vegas, and there’s still no way to copy/paste media fx, or multi-select the media and apply effects (or a plug-in chain via Filter Packages) to multiple media.

This shortfalling seems really silly and intuitive; different cameras have different properties. When adding mixed media to a project, the editor often needs to apply correction (saturation, color grading, sharpness) to all media from a particular camera. Although this *can* be done at the event level, it really is a media-level correction.

Would love Magix to add this… or one of the 3rd party developers…. 😉
