  • Applying Filters – does Final Cut have “filler” vidoe to be placed above others?

Posted by Michael Noble on November 19, 2006 at 7:38 pm

I’m used to editing in Avid and whenever I need to apply a filter (color effect, glows, etc) all I have to do is lay “filler” video above the tracks I want to manipulate and edit the effects into that filler video.

I can’t seem to find an equivilant in FCP.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

This is not the way this application works. There is no analogous function in FCP.

    Tom,

Couln’t nesting work in this way?

You could make a series of nests in a timeline to accomplish this, but it is much better to apply the filters directly to a clip.

If you want to cover several clips then it is best to nest the items and then apply the filters to the nested sequence.

ps: nesting in FCP and AVID are not the same.

    Peace and Love 🙂

Thanks guys – It looks like nesting in FPC is similar to video mixdown in Avid.

    I’ll give that a whirl.

You might want to read up on nesting because it doesn’t work as you might expect it to. It does not create an intermediate file that the effects are applied to. I think you’re better off using paste attributes as it gives you more flexibility for adjusting individual shots.

    All the best,

    I agree with Tom.

Video Mixdown in Avid is not really anything like an FCP nest. You lose all reference to original material in an AVID mixdown for a start.

One thing that might help in tandem with Paste Attributes, is that unlike Avid, you can paste the attributes or apply effects filters to multiple clips at once simply by multiple-selecting the clips in the timeline, and dragging or pasting the effect onto the selection.
