  • Applying effects to still images in AE 6.5

    Hello all,

I have just imported still images from Photoshop into AE and put them in my composition timeline. I can’t figure out how to animate still images though. I’m basically trying to fade them in and out using the Transition Effects. I right click on the layer (already made 3D) in the timeline and for example get to Effects->Transition->Iris Wipe and play with the settings there, but nothing happens at all … any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

Transitions in AE don’t work like they do in editing applications (remember that AE is not an editing application, it’s a motion graphics application). Making changes, even as simple as a fade, require setting keyframes for the property you want to animate.

If all you want to do is fade out a clip, set keyframes for opacity. If you want to use one of the Transition effects, you’ll need to set keyframes for the properties of the effect that you want to animate.

If you’re not familiar with keyframes yet, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get to learning. There are tons of books (like “Creating Motion Graphics” by Chris and Trish Meyer), videos (from Total Training and other companies), and tutorials. In fact, here’s one that might get you going:

Thanks a lot. Much appreciated, you probably saved me from an exercise in futility. JRF
